It was his first day back at work and Ianto was hiding in the Tourist Office. Tosh had come in earlier, brought him a coffee and given him that quiet smile that showed she understood and didn’t judge him. He blinked away a tear and took a deep breath Jack wanted him to go and spend more time in the Hub and it was something they had spoken about several times over coffee during the preceding weeks.
“You’re hiding yourself away up there, Ianto,” he had said.
The subject of Cat and Lucca had been danced around several times. Jack wasn’t comfortable working with them, and hadn’t contacted Cat since that fateful day. Lucca had become an elephant in the room where Ianto was concerned. Jack was taking the time tested method of dealing with things he didn’t like; ignore it until it went away. Ianto didn’t want to disturb the fragile peace that he and Jack appeared to have by mentioning his relationship with Lucca.
So by hiding in the Tourist Office, he was avoiding the inevitable; Owen’s barbed comments and Gwen’s suffocating sympathy. If she turned those doe eyes on him one more time and patted his arm saying ‘it’s alright Ianto’, he was going to scream or punch something, probably Owen. And that wouldn’t go down well.
They both meant well, but he couldn’t deal with either of them today. It was weird enough having to fit back into the Ianto Jones that they knew after spending four weeks reconnecting with himself. Still at least he was in a decent suit now and he had re-established a life outside Torchwood. He wasn’t sure where he stood with Jack though. Apart from a few sharp looks, Jack had been pretty much the same as always. The flirting had pretty much stopped though and Ianto was surprised to find that he missed that. Before it had been a welcome distraction, now, well he wasn’t sure what he wanted.
The bell above the door tinkled and Ianto looked up to see a shock of black hair and a familiar figure came through the door, ducking to avoid hitting his head on the doorjamb.
“Howdy.” The grin was infectious and Ianto found himself responding despite his current mood. “How long have we got?”
Ianto glanced at the CCTV monitor in time to see Jack flick between screens, do a double take, grab his coat and whirl out of the office.
“About 20 minutes.” he said and looked up at Lucca mimicking the mischievous grin that he saw.
“Best make the most of it then” and they both started their stopwatches.
Jack was idly checking the CCTV in between bouts of paperwork when a sudden movement caught his eye. He looked up and froze when he saw a figure cross the floor of the Tourist Office and then the screen went blank. Jack tapped the monitor, nothing, he waited for a few seconds. Nothing.
He stuck his head out of the office and yelled. “Tosh! Anything wrong with the CCTV feed from upstairs?”
Tosh flew through a couple of programs and yelled back “No”, before returning to her previous task.
Jack tapped the monitor again, it stubbornly refused to show any form of image feed. “Are you sure?” he yelled.
“Yes.” The reply was terse. Tosh double checked the feed, there was Ianto talking with the young boy who had walked in a few minutes earlier. “Do you have a problem up there Jack?”
“Nope, just curious, that’s all.” The reply came from just past her shoulder as Jack headed towards the lift. “I’m just popping out for a while”
“Do you need any help?” Gwen poked her head out of the boardroom.
“Jack, if you’re going out could you grab a coffee?” Owen’s voice tailed off as he realised Jack was out of earshot “What?” he said as he realised Tosh was staring at him
“The coffee machine is right there”
“I am NOT touching that thing”
“Ianto won’t mind,” Tosh said. Owen gave her a look. “Yes, well, it would probably be best to wait until he comes down,” she relented, turning to see Owen storming back to the medical bay muttering something about decaf.
Jack sprinted across the Plass toward the external entrance to the Tourist Office, focused completely on Ianto and what could be happening. So focused in fact, he completely missed the enormous red street bike parked illegally just above the Office. He arrived at the door and took a few seconds to compose himself before throwing it open and stepping inside.
Ianto looked up as the bell on the door went and nodded at Jack as he came through. The only other occupant in the tiny office was a young boy who was busy firing questions concerning the Bay and the procurement of ice cream in rapid succession at Ianto. Ianto gave a half grin and directions to Cadwaladers, along with recommended flavours. Jack rested against the door and watched with amusement. The boy glanced over his shoulder, noticed Jack and spun round. Jack grinned at him as the boy leant with his back against the counter, elbows on the desk and gave Jack the most thorough once over that he had had in a while.
“Well hello there.” he said, all floppy dark hair and flashing green eyes.
Ianto suddenly had a coughing fit behind the desk and Jack looked over, concerned. Ianto waved his arm in the universal ‘I’m fine’ gesture.
Jack mumbled a curt “Hello” at the boy and quickly crossed over to Ianto. “You ok?” he asked sotto voice. “The CCTV cut out.”
“I’m fine, honestly. You really didn’t need to come up here. I can be trusted to man the office on my own.” Ianto spoke quickly and flashed Jack a look before glancing at the boy.
Jack suddenly remembered they had an audience and turned to face him, switching on the full Harkness charm as he did so.
“Hi there, is there anything we can help you with kid?”
Behind him Ianto rolled his eyes.
The boy calmly regarded Jack and raised an eyebrow. “Seriously?” he asked, there was a mocking edge to his tone.
“Urm” Jack really didn’t know what to say. He hadn’t had much experience with teenagers.
“Don’t sweat it. See you later, Mr Jones.” The kid winked at Ianto, which set off another coughing fit, and sailed out of the door.
Jack stared after him for a few seconds; something about the boy was tickling his brain. He shrugged and turned back to Ianto as the sound of a motorcycle could be heard above. Suddenly everything seemed to click.
“Yes, sir?” Ianto’s expression was blank.
“Have you ever seen that boy before?” Ianto started to speak but Jack held up a hand “The truth please.”
The glare that comment earnt him was glacial. “I have never seen that boy before, sir.” The ‘sir’ was spat out.
Jack sighed, he deserved that, at least Ianto was telling the truth though. He deactivated the mod that differentiated between truth and lies and smiled ruefully up at Ianto.
“Sorry, I guess I deserved that.”
Ianto nodded stiffly “You said when I came back, that you wouldn’t hold my…..my previous actions against me. Clean slate you said.”
“I know, I’m sorry. I guess I have to work on my trust issues.”
Ianto raised an eyebrow. “Was there anything else you wanted, sir? Or should I just open the door?”
“What? Oh well actually there was. Ianto Jones, how do you feel about camping?”
Jack swept through the open door to the Hub, completely missing the look of horror on Ianto’s face.
