I am so sorry that this chapter has taken so long, I really am. There will be another update next week tho!

This chapter is a flashback, hence the italics!

I really do appreciate all comments as well! Thank you!

“Ok, spill, what are you? Who are you?” Ianto asked.

“Interesting that you started with what.” One eyebrow rose. “Human. Mostly,”

“Mostly?”

“Mostly” Lucca confirmed.

They were lying on a grass verge by the bay. Having met the polite, well-mannered and gentle ‘Luke Mitchell’, Mrs Jones had been more than happy to let her son spend time with him. Since then, they’d rarely been apart Lucca’s perception filter lasted until they got out of the estate, then he resumed his proper form and they would set off for the delights of Cardiff. Most of the time they ended up sat somewhere chatting. Ianto had told Lucca things that he had never told anyone before and in return Lucca had told him little bits about himself. This had led to the current conversation.

“How mostly is mostly?”

“About 70 to 80 percent”

“70 to 80 percent?”

“Yup”

“But you look…”

“Human?” Lucca finished the sentence ‘Well, duh. I did say I was mostly human.” He leaned back on the grass, staring into the sky. “Anyway, the correct question should have been ‘when are you?’” Lucca turned back to Ianto and grinned.

“When are you?” Ianto was confused.

“51st century.”

“Fuck off!”

“You don’t believe me?” Lucca raised himself up on his elbows.

“Well, you have to admit, it’s pretty far-fetched.”

“Yeah, cos anyone can turn into a teenager in front of your eyes.”

“There is that.” Ianto conceded.

They sat in companionable silence for a few minutes until Ianto spoke again.

“What’s it like?”

“What’s what like?”

“The future.”

“Same as now really. Noisier, dirtier, a little more dangerous. Oh, and there are still no hover cars.”

Ianto grinned “We were promised those in 2015.”

“Not gonna happen.”

“Do you mean to tell me that the movie makers lie?” Ianto’s eyes widened in mock outrage.

Lucca looked over and raised his eyebrows then stuck his tongue out. “It’s a good job you’re pretty, cos your acting sucks.”

“Pretty!”

“Yeah. Valuable commodity you are kiddo. There’s no 100 percent humans left by my time.”

“None?” Ianto processed this information. “What happened to us?”

“Interbreeding, genetic tinkering, that sort of thing. The further you get from ‘civilisation’,” Lucca made finger quotes “the purer the DNA. See him?” he pointed over to a man who was striding purposefully towards the Plas. Ianto nodded. “He’s from the Outer Rim, waaaaaay out in the sticks. Got all sorts of stupid purity rules out there; means he’s about 90 to 95 percent human.”

Ianto stared at the man “Are there many of you?” he asked, never taking his eyes off the tall figure.

“Nah, less than half a dozen on this planet at this time. He’s the most human of us all ironically.” Lucca let out a bark of laughter.

“Hummmm.” Ianto mumbled distractedly. “What?”

“Aaaaah, not my story to tell.” Lucca lay back on the grass and gazed up at the sky.

“Why is he wearing a World War II air force greatcoat?”

“He’s got a hard-on for the 40’s. Would you believe there are actual braces under there as well?” Lucca sniffed dismissively.

“How come you don’t dress like that?”

“Like what?”

“All different and stuff.”

Lucca raised himself on his elbows again.

“And why would I want to do that? You’ve got to move with the times; otherwise you stick out like a sore thumb. And besides, I look good like this.” He winked at Ianto and lay back on the grass.

The man passed them without even glancing their way. Ianto was fascinated; he looked completely normal, once you discounted the clothes. He turned back to Lucca as the man disappeared out of sight.

“Do you know him?”

“Why? Want an introduction?”

“Just wondering. Thought you might all stick together, y’know a ‘refugees from the future’ club.”

Lucca looked at him sharply. “What makes you think we’re refugees?”

Ianto shrugged. “You’re still here. You could be anywhere, but you’ve all picked Cardiff in the 90s. There have got to be better places; London, New York, anywhere.”

“Oh I don’t know, Cardiff has its own attractions.” Lucca raked his eyes over Ianto who blushed. “Besides London is too polluted, and both it and New York contain far too many people. Cardiff is a nice size.”

“Yeah, right.” Ianto snorted derisively and rolled his eyes, falling back to lie on the grass. Quick as a flash Lucca was on top of him, looking down at him, green eyes sparkling with mischief.

“Oh you’d be surprised at what Cardiff has to offer.” The smile was almost feral.

“H-how did you do that?” Lucca’s sudden proximity was making it hard to think.

“Genetic engineering and a few minor biological upgrades.”

“Really?” Ianto’s interest was piqued and he started to rise up on his elbows, which bought him closer to Lucca. Momentarily forgetting that he was effectively pinned by Lucca, he tried to wriggle further up “Is that common in the future? Does everyone have them? Are they compulsory?”

Lucca huffed and raised his eyebrows at Ianto. He briefly debated whether or not his pheromones had lost their effectiveness. It happened sometimes, especially if the subject became accustomed. He dialled them up a notch, slightly satisfied when Ianto’s pupils dilated a little and his breathing became a little more ragged.

“It’s fairly common. It depends where you’re from and what your employer requires.”

“Is that why you smell so good? Cos that’s not aftershave.”

“Yep. Ianto?”

“What?”

“Shut up.”

“Make me.” Ianto matched Lucca’s grin.

“Thought you’d never ask.” And Lucca leaned in and kissed him.

It was a good kiss; correction, it was a great kiss, and yet Ianto couldn’t quite switch off the nagging part of his brain that was currently screaming at him that he was kissing another bloke in the middle of Cardiff where anyone could see them and what if his father turned up, or his school friends, or his sister. The vast majority of Ianto was telling him to ignore this and just go with the kiss, but Lucca felt him stiffen and pulled back. Ianto moaned a little at the loss of contact.

“Freaking out?”

“Kinda, a little.” Ianto mumbled.

“Is it the kissing thing, the guy thing or the public thing?”

Ianto took a moment to think. “The public thing.” Everything else had been fine, well better than fine. He wouldn’t mind doing it again, just not where his dad could find him.

“That all?”

“Pretty much.”

Lucca grinned at the young man beneath him. “So, what do you wanna do now? We could go somewhere else; I could take you back to yours…”

“Well, I don’t want to go home. Can’t we just hang out some more?”

Lucca tipped his head to the side and considered. “Sure. In fact I think I’ll take you to mine, Ianto Jones. It’s about time you met my family.” And giving the surprised boy a peck on the lips, he hauled them both to their feet.

“Wha? Huh? Wait!” Lucca had a firm grip on Ianto’s hand and was dragging him off towards a side street. “I’m not dressed right. They don’t know we’re coming. They could be busy. Wouldn’t it be better to call and arrange something? And I haven’t got anything to bring.”

“Ianto, it really doesn’t matter.” They had reached the side street and Lucca pulled Ianto towards him using the leverage provided by their linked hands. “I’ve met and made nice with your mother,” his voice was unusually serious, “now it’s about time you met my cousin. And the best of it is you get to be Ianto Jones.”

Ianto looked up at Lucca and saw from his expression that he really was serious about this. Lucca had vaguely mentioned his cousin and had often said that he would like Ianto to meet her. Ianto had always managed to fob him off but Lucca was right. He wasn’t being fair, expecting Lucca to meet his family but not doing the same. He took a deep breath and voiced his main objection.

“What if she doesn’t like me? I don’t get to disguise myself the way you can. I’m just me.”

“Are you kidding? She’s going to love you. Is that a yes?” As Ianto nodded, Lucca let out a delighted burst of laughter. “Come on, I’ve been waiting to show you this for ages.”

They rounded a corner and there was a huge motorbike, glistening black and red and chrome. Lucca slid over to it and ran his fingers over the fuel tank.

“Isn’t she gorgeous?” he purred, totally focused on the bike.

“Is it yours?”

“Oh yes, all mine.” Lucca ran his hand possessively over the bike.

“How come I’ve not seen it before?”

“You’ve never asked to come round to my house before.”

“Yeah, but you’ve come round to mine loads, and you’re always walking.”

Lucca stared at him for a moment, then raised his eyebrows.

“Think about it kiddo, what 16-year-old could afford this? Let alone have the licence to ride it. Now I could turn up to yours on it, but your mum would get Lucca and not Luke. What do you think she would do then?”

Ianto looked contrite and Lucca turned back to the bike, muttering as he did so. He was almost bent double over it, fiddling with something down the side next to the wall. Ianto tried very hard not to stare at his arse.

“Oh please,” a muffled voice rose up from behind the bike, “I don’t wear them purely as a fashion statement. Enjoy the view. I would, I have! Aha! Catch.” And with that Lucca straightened up and threw a helmet at a furiously blushing Ianto, “Aww, anyone ever told you look cute when you blush? Your ears go all pink.”

Ianto’s blush deepened as Lucca crowded over him, taking the helmet and putting it on the back of the bike.

“Now, let’s try this again,” he purred and pushed Ianto up against the wall as his lips descended on him. He pulled back a bit softly saying: “No one can see us here. Not quite as romantic as I planned, but I do have a liking for solid, flat surfaces.” And he lazily started to kiss Ianto’s neck.

Ianto stood immobile against the wall for a few seconds, until Lucca’s words penetrated his brain. He realised that he could do what he wanted and the thought was intoxicating. ‘Fuck it’ he thought and grabbed the lapels of Lucca’s jacket, using the advantage of momentary surprise to spin them so that he could slam Lucca’s back against the wall. Lucca growled and slid his hands down to Ianto’s arse to pull him closer, kissing him with greater ferocity and occasionally placing little nipping bites on his lips. Suddenly Lucca moved his left hand back up Ianto’s body and tangled it into his hair, pulling his head back and across. He licked a broad stripe up Ianto’s neck

“I have been waiting fucking weeks for that Mr Jones,” Lucca growled out before letting him go.

Ianto stumbled and would have fallen without Lucca’s sudden grip on his wrist. He was panting and flushed and gazed at Lucca, whose eyes were heavy lidded with lust.

“My place?” Lucca asked and Ianto could only nod dumbly. “Always knew there was a firecracker in there.” Lucca waggled his eyebrows and licked his lips. “Well worth the wait.” He jumped on the bike, pulling his helmet on as Ianto fumbled with his. “Her name’s Cat by the way.”

“Who?”

“My cousin. Now hang on tight.”

“What? Why?”

“Cos you’ll fall off otherwise.” Lucca laughed, flipped his visor shut and started the engine.

Ianto clambered on behind and gingerly held onto the bike. Lucca gestured something, but with the visor being black, Ianto couldn’t understand. He shrugged his incomprehension.

“Oh for gods sake,” Lucca exclaimed as he flipped up the visor. “Hold on tight to me. Don’t look so shocked, you’ve had my tongue in your mouth, I think you can put your arms around me.”

Put like that, it really didn’t seem much of a big deal, so Ianto wound his arms around Lucca, who drove the bike out of the alley with a whoop of pure delight.

The next twenty minutes were some of the most terrifying of Ianto’s life. Lucca weaved in and out of traffic, used hand signals not found in the Highway Code and displayed a cavalier attitude to the speed limit. Ianto had tried shutting his eyes five minutes into the ride but found that just made everything worse. He clung tightly to Lucca, no longer caring about who might see them, or how he might appear. As they left the city centre the traffic thinned until Lucca was racing along empty roads.

Now that the threat of imminent death had diminished, Ianto could start to enjoy the ride. He released his vice-like grip on Lucca’s waist and relaxed into the feel of the bike, leaning round corners and watching the scenery wizz by.

Lucca smiled behind his helmet as he felt the arms around him ease and realised that the boy behind him was following his body position. He decided to take the scenic route and show Ianto exactly what this baby could do. He opened the throttle and let rip, laughing as he felt Ianto’s arms automatically tighten around him again.

Ianto caught the exhilaration and giggled as they sped up, losing himself in the increased speed and thrill of the ride.

All too soon Ianto realised that Lucca was slowing down and turning into a small cul-de-sac, finally pulling the bike onto the drive of a normal looking semi. It had a porch, bay windows, a small front garden, a large double garage and was completely average. Ianto felt a slight disappointment as the bike came to a halt and Lucca pushed something on his wrist strap, causing the garage door to open so that the bike could be put under cover. He directed Ianto to the shelf for the helmets and then they both walked around to the front door. Lucca shut the garage, turned to Ianto and spread his arms expansively.

“Here we are!”

“Very nice,” Ianto said, his voice flat.

“What?” Lucca asked, disappointed at Ianto’s tone.

“Nothing.”

“What?” Lucca demanded.

Ianto looked at the ground and felt slightly like a petulant child. “It’s very normal.”  He toed the ground.

“What did you expect?” Lucca teased “Bells and whistles? A space ship? I told you, we look to blend in; far easier that way. Helps us get work. Come on, let’s go in.”

“Are you sure this is ok?” Ianto’s nerves were returning full force now that Lucca was standing on the front steps with his hand on the door.

“Pfft!” Lucca bounded down the steps, grabbed Ianto’s wrist and towed him up to the door. “I told you before, she’ll love you. Now come on.” He pushed Ianto through the front door and into the porch. As they stepped in the windows darkened and the light glowed red.

“What the hell?” Ianto was utterly confused.

“Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit.” Lucca pushed his way past Ianto and shut the front door. “Trust me to forget about that.”

“About what?” Ianto was trying not to panic as Lucca went over to some drawers set into a wall unit, pulled out one marked ‘Lucca’ in elegant script and started emptying his pockets. Ianto’s eyes bugged as he caught sight of some of the things that Lucca was throwing haphazardly into the drawer. “What the hell are those?”

“Throwing knives, pulse pistols and oh, a couple of standard boot knives. Just basic self defence stuff really.”

“Self defence stuff? You mean to tell me that you’ve had that lot with you every time we’ve met up?” Ianto felt like everything normal was slipping away from him “And what’s with the red light, and the dark windows?”

“Standard operating procedure.”

Lucca was distracted. He’d closed the drawer yet the light stayed red. He opened the drawer and shuffled everything around in it, and shut it again. The light stayed red. He opened the drawer and pushed it firmly closed. The light stayed red. He patted himself down and re-checked his boots. The light stayed red.

“Fuck, fuck, fuckity, fuck. Why are you still red?” he yelled at the light.

Ianto tried to hold back a giggle, but the sheer insanity of the situation was getting to him, and as Lucca got more and more agitated, he found it harder and harder to hold back. Finally he gave up and started laughing. Lucca stared at him blankly and then started frowning at Ianto’s giggles. Ianto tried to stop, he really did, but the expression on Lucca’s face made it impossible. He laughed and laughed until he was on the verge of tears.

Lucca sniffed. “I don’t think you fully appreciate the gravity of the situation.” Ianto’s laugher got stronger and Lucca sighed heavily. “That red light means that someone standing in this porch has a weapon. We can’t get in the house proper unless we’re clean, so we’re stuck here. I obviously missed something somewhere, so we can’t get in.” Ianto had stopped the loud guffaws and had calmed down to hiccups. “I’ve no idea what I’ve missed, I’ve checked everywhere.” Lucca slumped down next to the drawers.

“You could ask the cute piece of eye candy that you brought home with you,” said a female voice dryly

Lucca and Ianto’s heads whipped around, Lucca’s in delight, Ianto’s in shock. A young woman stood in the doorway to the main part of the house. She had red hair, pale skin and was wearing an oversized cream sweater and tight dark trousers. She leaned casually against the door jam and a small silver pistol dangled from her fingers. She was regarding the pair of them with a long-suffering expression.

“Well?” she asked, directing her question at Lucca.

He flashed her a blinding smile and turned to Ianto.

“Do you have anything like a pocket knife; anything like that in your pockets?”

Ianto rifled through his pockets and pulled out his keys which had a mini pocket knife on the key ring.

“Like this?”

“Yep, perfect. Drop it in here.” Lucca held out an unnamed drawer identical to the one he’d filled earlier and Ianto dropped the knife in. “Oh, and your lighter too.”

“My lighter?”

“Lighter?” The woman’s voice had a sharp edge to it

Lucca shot her a sharp look and took Ianto’s lighter and dropped that into the box. He then slid the box back into the unit, the light turned blue and the windows returned to normal. Lucca wrote Ianto’s name in flowing script on a small card and slid it into the front of the drawer.

“Shall we go in?” He gestured to the doorway where the woman was standing.

“It might be best to introduce us first,” she said, a slight smile playing on her lips.

“Hello, my name’s Jones, Ianto Jones.” Ianto held out his hand to her.

“Cat,” she replied, shaking his hand and smiling warmly at him. “So you’re the Ianto that he’s been going on about for weeks.” Green eyes twinkled at him as she directed him into the house.

Lucca squeezed past her and gestured to the small pistol. “Kinda overkill there cuz.”

“You never know who could be out there. I don’t take chances.” Her voice was firm. Lucca huffed. Cat stilled him with a hand on his arm. “He’s very young,” she whispered. “Possibly too young.”

“I know what I’m doing.”

“That’ll be a first.” Walking into the house proper, Cat slipped her arm into Ianto’s offered one. “Let me show you around kiddo, and you can tell me if there is any particular reason you reek of my cousin’s pheromones.”

“Phe-pheromones?” Ianto flushed crimson and Cat laughed.

“Sor-ry,” sing-songed Lucca coming up behind them. He slid his hand round Ianto’s waist and dropped a kiss onto his hair, whilst pointedly ignoring Cat’s stern look. “Forgot to mention those.”

“Come through to somewhere more comfortable; I’ll get him to fix us drinks and then I want to hear all about you.” Shooting Lucca another stern look, and pushing him in the direction of the kitchen, Cat steered Ianto into the lounge.

Well worth the wait!! :D LOVED the middley-beginning bit, just after Lucca explains when he's from! (do people read comments before reading the story? lol don't want to spoil anything).

Thanks honey *grin*, I've no idea if people read comments first, I don't, but I've not idea if others are the same!

And I'm glad that you liked Lucca giving a bit of backstory, he's never really been precious about keeping 'secrets' *grin*

This is great. One thing I like is that neither of them are Mary Sues, I'm not sure whether I even like them that much, you've extrapolated what they'd be like really well, I think the 51st Century characters we know, Jack, River and John Hart all have similar traits.

I really loved Ianto's first glimpse of Jack, excellent bit of exposition, so Ianto has known about Jack for a really long time.

Thank you so much *blush* that really means a lot.

And I thought it would have been very odd if Ianto had never seen Jack before, after all, they're both in Cardiff at the same time, and it's not like Jack ever tried to blend in!

Well worth the wait (and RL does tend to get in the way of the important stuff sometimes :-D)!

Love the backstory too, and your young Ianto is perfect!

Great work, again! Can't wait for the next chapter. *chomping at the bit*
